Fatal shark attacks won't affect tourism

27 Oct, 2011 01:00 AM
TOURISM in the great southern region and Esperance specifically is unlikely to be adversely affected by the recent news of Western Australia’s third fatal shark attack in several weeks, Australia’s Golden Outback chief executive Jac Eerbeek said.

Mr Eerbeek’s comment comes in light of comments made by Tourism WA, that recent attacks in WA have the potential to scare tourists off our beaches.

But Mr Eerbeek said such events were unlikely to tip the scale, saying that statistically the events occurring in such close proximity was highly unusual.

“It is very unfortunate that several people in WA have now fallen victim to fatal shark attacks, but in all likeliness we may not see another attack for another year or two.

“I don’t think that the attacks will stop anybody from swimming in Esperance. While Esperance’s phenomenal white beaches do have that attraction for locals and visitors alike, in my point of view, most people will still swim irrespective of the attacks.”
