THE Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s second annual Over the Horizon forum was an “overwhelming success”, according to chamber CEO Marcus Tromp.
More than 200 people attended the forum at the Esperance Civic Centre on Thursday, some travelling from as far as the eastern states to see what was in store for southeast region in 2010.
Speakers hailed from a diverse range of industries – resources, fishing, tourism and agriculture – but all agreed the region’s foreseeable future was positive.
Minister for Regional Development and Lands Brendon Grylls was particularly optimistic about the town and its outlying areas.
“You’re in very good shape … and the list of [Over the Horizon] sponsors clearly indicates that the big end of town is interested in you, which is good,” he said in his keynote address.
“I think you can be very proud of the communities in this part of the world.”
Mr Grylls said he encouraged the forum to engage new people in the community, so it would continue to develop.
“The harbour, archipelago and landscape here are just stunning,” he said.
“[But] crossing the road to speak to that person who looks new, inviting them to a barbecue, getting them engaged in a sporting team or the local St John’s Ambulance … that’s when they’re likely to stay.
“You as a community can add so much.”
Mr Tromp said the Minister’s address reflected the confidence of the speakers.
“Our future is certainly secure,” he said.
“With such a strong industry diversity, the short to medium term for this region is looking good.”
Mr Tromp said he hoped more local business people would attend the 2011 Over the Horizon.
“The ones who attended this year definitely have the upper hand on the insight into the future.
“The feedback has been fantastic, so hopefully next year more local businesses will get involved.”
