MEMBER for the Agricultural Region, Wendy Duncan MLC, had the opportunity to meet with Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Alannah MacTiernan, earlier this month to discuss the State Government’s commitment to the clean-up of Esperance.
Ms Duncan, who also took part in a separate meeting with Magellan Metals general manager for corporate and social responsibility, Dr John Yeates, said she came away from both meetings feeling reassured about the answers she received.
“I have been assured by all parties that Magellan Metals will make a substantial contribution to the clean-up of the town and the port and that the final outcome will be known soon,” Ms Duncan said.
Dr Yeates also told Ms Duncan that Magellan Metals would be making an additional commitment to funding local community projects over the coming years.
Ms Duncan said the most positive announcement to come from the meetings was an indication from Ms MacTiernan and from Esperance Port Authority CEO, Dennis Parsons, that the Esperance port had a long-term plan to move to the containerisation of mineral exports through the port.
Ms MacTiernan also reaffirmed her commitment to provide reverse osmosis systems to householders whose rainwater tanks remained contaminated with Magellan lead.
Ms MacTiernan also announced that the results of the Golder report – a health and ecological risk assessment report, would be released soon, and the second phase of the report would involve comprehensive sampling of the town across a grid to define the extent of remaining lead contamination.
Commenting that the outcomes of her meetings were very positive, Ms Duncan said she would now await action on the commitments received.
“The Esperance community is well within its rights to start getting impatient about these commitments,” she said.
“We have been waiting for the Golder report and a clean-up for a long time now, and although the community has given the groups involved the benefit of the doubt, it’s now time to see some results.”
Ms Duncan also said that anyone who is eligible to receive a reverse osmosis system and has not been able to obtain one should contact her office and she will pursue the matter for them.
