WITH arthritis week in full swing, it may be time to remember that man’s best friend can also suffer from the potentially debilitating joint condition.
According to local veterinarian Dr Isabelle Carson, the onset of winter means that pet owners are more likely to begin to see the symptoms of arthritis.
“A lot of the earlier symptoms of arthritis can be missed because they are quite subtle,” Dr Carson said.
“But if we can recognise these symptoms early, then there is a better chance of reducing the rate of progression.”
Some of these symptoms include a reluctance to jump up on things, reduced tolerance for exercise, stiffness in the mornings, lameness and pain.
According to Dr Carson, a few simple measures can make all the difference in managing and preventing arthritis in your best friend.
“It’s important to manage your dog’s weight, keep him or her warm and maintain regular, gentle exercise rather than a once-a-week tear around the block.
“There is also a range of supplements available over the counter from your local vet.
“Even if your dog is not showing symptoms of arthritis, it’s a good idea to keep those things in mind to maintain your dog’s overall health.
“It’s important to remember that arthritic dogs can still live a happy and healthy life, particularly if the condition is recognised early.”
