Cannabis charges

14 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
TWO Esperance men were charged last week with cultivating cannabis with the intent to sell or supply.

On Tuesday, October 6, Esperance Detectives noticed two men near a cannabis crop in a small bush area, at the intersection of Dempster Road and Wittenoom Road.

There were 246 cannabis seedlings found in the area.

Police believe it was a substantial commercial venture.

Detective Sergeant Backhouse said if grown to their full maturity, each plant had a potential value of about $1000.

He said it was an excellent result and was the largest cannabis seizure by the Esperance police in recent years.

"There are people who believe cannabis is a harmless drug, however there is increasing medical evidence that continual use results in serious brain damage and also leads those users on to stronger and potentially life threatening drugs.
