Bumpy ride for a good cause

Bumpy ride for a good cause

18 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
FOR the past week, Perth automotive engineer and mechanic, John Sexton, has been travelling around WA astride a classic motorcycle.

It may sound like an ideal holiday, but Mr Sexton has a serious message behind his adventure – raising funds for Grass Roots, a Perth respite centre for the intellectually impaired.

The 2000 kilometre ride has taken Mr Sexton from Perth, through Bunbury, Mount Barker and Hopetoun to Esperance – where he spent a day raising money at Bunnings.

On Thursday, he departed town heading to Norseman and Kalgoorlie, aiming to head back into Perth on Wednesday, November 18.

“So far we’ve raised just over $2000 on the road, and we raised $14,000 before we left. We are aiming for $20,000 and I think we’re going to reach that.”

The classic motorcycle Mr Sexton has been riding is a 1947 Royal Enfield, which he has painstakingly restored.

“It’s done 1000 kilometres and it’s still going strong. I’ve had a couple of clutch problems, but we’ll finish the ride ok.

“It doesn’t have any suspension, so it can be a bumpy old ride.”

Mr Sexton said he became involved with the cause through his intellectually impaired nephew.

“I saw the problems for him and the family, and that’s what is so great about Grass Roots – it looks after the friends and family as well. If they need help, it’s there.

“It has been a very worthwhile trip so far. I’m happy with the progress.”
