40-metre phone tower installed

14 Sep, 2010 11:59 PM
A NEW 40-metre high telecommunications tower was installed in Chadwick last week to improve local mobile phone services.

The tower was initially planned for a location on Lalor Drive in March 2009, but local opposition forced Telstra to abandon those plans.

Reasons behind objections from residents included possible health risks associated with radiation from transmission towers and fears the tower would lower the value of their homes.

In April this year the Esperance Shire Council approved the application for the tower and equipment shed to be located at Lot 703 Effie Turner Drive.

A second tower is planned for erection near the Esperance airport to improve local service coverage to the same level it would have been if the Lalor Drive tower had been approved.
